How To Choose Pet Feeder
Buying an automatic pet feeder for the first time — or upgrading from one that let you down — takes more thought than it looks. This guide covers the questions most pet owners ask before buying, based on real purchasing decisions and the most common issues reported by cat and dog owners in communities like Reddit and Quora.
All feeders mentioned in this guide are available at tajrah.com/collections/automatic-feeders. If you have a specific question after reading, email us at support@tajrah.com and we will suggest the right model for your situation.
Start here: what do you actually need?
Do I actually need an automatic feeder, or is it just a convenience gadget?
For most pet owners, an automatic feeder solves a specific, recurring problem: you cannot always be home at the exact time your pet expects to eat. That might mean working late, a long commute, an overnight trip, or simply wanting your cat to stop waking you up at 5 AM because it associates you getting up with being fed.
If your pet eats on a consistent schedule and you are reliably home for every meal, you probably do not need one. But if your schedule varies, you travel occasionally, or your vet has recommended portion control — a feeder earns its place quickly. Most people who buy one say they wish they had done it sooner.
What is the single most important thing to check before buying any feeder?
WiFi compatibility. Nearly every automatic feeder on the market — including all Tajrah models — requires a 2.4GHz WiFi connection. They do not work with 5GHz-only networks.
Most modern home routers broadcast both bands, often under the same network name. If you run into connection issues during setup, go into your router settings, separate the two bands, and connect the feeder to the 2.4GHz band specifically. This is the most common reason people report difficulty setting up automatic feeders. Knowing it in advance saves a lot of frustration.
Does my pet need to be trained to use a feeder?
Most cats and dogs adapt within a few days to a week. The main adjustment is the sound of the motor when food drops — some pets are startled by it initially. Using the voice recording feature so your pet hears your voice at mealtime helps. Most pets figure it out quickly once they connect the sound with food appearing.
Choosing the right capacity
How do I know what size hopper I need?
A standard adult cat eating about half a cup of dry food per day goes through roughly 3.5 cups per week. Here is a practical guide:
- 3L hopper (about 12 cups): roughly 3 weeks for one adult cat
- 4L hopper (about 16 cups): roughly 4 to 5 weeks for one adult cat
- 5L hopper (about 20 cups): roughly 5 to 6 weeks for one adult cat
- 6L hopper (about 24 cups): roughly 6 to 7 weeks for one adult cat
For small dogs, roughly double the daily estimate. Use a kitchen scale during the first week to verify how much food is actually dispensing per portion setting, then adjust until it matches your vet's recommendation.
I travel for work a few days at a time. What size do I need?
For a 3 to 5 day trip with one adult cat, a 4L feeder is usually sufficient. If you travel frequently or want more buffer for everyday use, 5L or 6L gives you more flexibility.
Capacity alone does not make a feeder suitable for longer trips — you also need reliable battery backup and a stable WiFi connection so you can check remotely that meals are dispensing correctly. A camera model lets you visually confirm your pet ate, which most traveling pet owners find genuinely reassuring.
Camera or no camera
Do I need a camera on my feeder?
A camera answers one question that a schedule log cannot: did my pet actually eat? The feeder can record that food was dispensed, but a camera confirms your pet came to the bowl, ate, and walked away normally.
If you travel overnight or work long hours and want that visual confirmation, a camera feeder is worth the extra cost. If you are mostly home and just want meals automated for convenience, a feeder without a camera does the job at a lower price point. Camera models also include two-way audio, which some pet owners find useful for calling their pet to the feeder or simply hearing them during the day.
What is the difference between 480P, 720P, and 1080P camera feeders?
- 480P: basic visibility in good lighting — fine for confirming your pet is at the bowl, not suitable for low-light rooms
- 720P with night vision: clearer image, works in low-light conditions — a practical middle option for most homes
- 1080P with night vision: the clearest picture, best if your pet eats in a dim room or you want confident visibility at any hour
If your feeding area is well-lit, 720P is usually enough. Check the specifications on individual product pages for exact camera resolution before purchasing.
Is the camera live stream free, or do I need to pay for it?
Live streaming through the app is free on all Tajrah camera models. Some models offer optional cloud video storage for recorded clips — this may require a separate subscription. Check the app after setup for current storage options. You are never required to pay to use the basic live view feature.
Feeding schedules and portion control
How many meals per day can I schedule?
Tajrah feeders support between 1 and 15 meals per day depending on the model. Each meal can be scheduled at a specific time with its own portion size. Check the individual product page for the exact number of daily meals your chosen model supports. Most cat owners find 2 to 4 meals per day works well for everyday use.
How accurate are the portions?
Portions are measured by the feeder's rotating dispenser, not by weight. The amount per unit varies slightly depending on kibble size, shape, and density. We recommend using a kitchen scale during the first week to verify how much food is actually dispensing per unit, then adjusting the count to match your vet's recommended daily amount. Once calibrated for your specific kibble, the feeder is consistent.
Can a feeder help with portion control? Can a feeder help with that?
Yes. This is one of the most practical uses for an automatic feeder. Free-feeding makes it difficult to control intake. A scheduled feeder dispenses a fixed amount at set times and nothing in between, which makes it easier to follow a vet-recommended daily calorie target consistently — even when you are not home. Your vet should advise on the correct daily amount; the feeder makes it easier to stick to it.
What kibble size fits?
Standard dry kibble up to 12mm in diameter works reliably across most Tajrah models. One model supports kibble from 2mm to 15mm. Wet food is not compatible with any Tajrah feeder. Check the specifications on the individual product page for the exact kibble size range before purchasing.
Feeder and water fountain combos
Should I get a combo or separate units?
A combo unit saves counter space and simplifies setup — one power adapter, one app connection, one footprint. It is a practical choice if you want both feeding and hydration covered without two separate devices. For most single-cat households, a combo is a good starting point.
The trade-off is that if one component needs cleaning or maintenance, you are dealing with the full unit at once. Separate units give you more flexibility — you can clean the fountain without touching the feeder, and upgrade one independently. For multi-pet homes or pets with different needs, separate units often work better.
Why do cats need a water fountain instead of a regular bowl?
Cats are naturally drawn to moving water — still water is often less appealing to them than running water. Many cats drink significantly more when water is moving and filtered. Adequate water intake matters for kidney and urinary health, which are common concerns in cats — particularly older cats or those on a dry food diet. A fountain does not guarantee specific health outcomes; your vet is the right person to advise on your cat's hydration needs. But many pet owners notice their cats drink more frequently after switching to a fountain.
How often do I need to replace the fountain filter?
For most models, every 2 to 4 weeks with regular daily use. If you have multiple pets or notice the water flow slowing, replace it sooner. Running the fountain without a working filter reduces its effectiveness. Replacement filters are available separately in our store.
Power and reliability
What happens if the power goes out?
Most Tajrah feeders include battery backup that automatically activates during a power outage, keeping the feeding schedule running. Camera and WiFi features require active power and will pause during an outage to conserve battery. The feeder motor continues running on batteries.
Batteries are not included in most models. Install them before you need them — do not wait for an outage. Check the product page and user manual for the correct battery type and quantity for your model.
Is it safe to leave the feeder running when no one is home for several days?
Automatic feeders are designed for exactly this purpose. With charged battery backup, a full hopper, and a stable WiFi connection, a feeder can run reliably for multiple days without anyone home. Do a test run a few days before a trip to confirm everything is working as expected.
For trips longer than 3 to 4 days, having someone check on your pet at least once is still a good idea — not because the feeder is unreliable, but because pets can have health or other needs that a feeder cannot address.
Will the feeder jam?
Most Tajrah feeders include an anti-jam mechanism that reverses the motor if a blockage is detected and sends an app notification. To reduce the chance of jamming: use kibble within the recommended size range for your model, keep the hopper dry, and clean the dispensing mechanism every 1 to 2 weeks. Do not mix wet food or treats into the hopper.
Cleaning and maintenance
How often should I clean the feeder?
We recommend cleaning the bowl and food-contact surfaces at least every 1 to 2 weeks. Dry kibble can leave oil residue over time, and moisture from the environment can cause food at the bottom of the hopper to clump. All removable parts on Tajrah feeders are hand-washable with mild dish soap. Allow parts to dry completely before reassembling to avoid moisture in the hopper.
How difficult is it to refill the hopper without making a mess?
Most Tajrah feeders have a top-loading hopper with a twist-lock or safety-lock lid. To refill, open the lid, pour kibble in, and close. Leave a small amount of space at the top to prevent kibble from shifting and jamming the dispenser. A small cup or funnel makes refilling tidier if your kibble bag does not have a resealable spout.
